Question of representation and Turkish conservative groups in Vienna’s 2020 local elections

Aufbauend auf Feldforschung und Social Media Forschung vor den Wiener Lokalwahlen 2020 befasst sich der Betrag mit Themen der (Nicht-) Repräsentation und Wahltendenzen von Wiener_innen türkischer Herkunft. Die Bedenken, Gründe und Handlungsfreiheiten von Wähler_innen und Nicht-Wähler_innen betrachtend, vermeidet der Artikel eine Über-Generalisierung von Menschen als „kulturell Andere“.

English abstract
Built on field research and social media research before Vienna’s 2020 local elections, the paper tackles the issues of (non)representation and voting tendencies of Vienna’s residents of Turkish origin. Highlighting the concerns, rationales, and agency of voters and non-voters, the paper offers to avoid overgeneralization of people as “cultural others”.

Cansu Civelek graduated from the Department of Political Science at
the Middle East Technical University, Ankara. She obtained her master’s degree at the
Social and Cultural Anthropology Department at the University of Vienna. In 2015, she
completed her first documentary movie called “Warning Karapınar! Voices from an Urban
Regeneration”. In 2020, she received her doctoral degree from the same department in Vienna with a dissertation titled “Non-spectacular policy-making: Urban governance,
silence, and dissent in an abortive renewal project in Eskişehir, Turkey”.
Currently, she is a lecturer at the University of Vienna.

Cansu Civelek graduierte am Institut für Politikwissenschaft der Middle East Technical University, Ankara. Ihren Master erwarb sie am Institut für Kultur- und Sozialanthropologie der Universität Wien. 2015 vollendete sie ihren ersten Dokumentarfilm “Warning Karapınar! Voices from an Urban Regeneration”. 2020 erwarb sie ihren Doktortitel am selben Institut der Universität Wien mit einer Dissertation mit dem Titel “Non-spectacular policy-making: Urban governance, silence, and dissent in an abortive renewal project in Eskişehir, Turkey”. Zur Zeit ist sie Lektorin an der Universität Wien.
