Abstract
Die polnische Transformation im Postsozialismus ist geprägt von einer zunehmenden Polarisierung der Gesellschaft. In keinem Staat der EU leben noch so viele Menschen von der Landwirtschaft, und auch in den Dörfern wird die ökonomische Ungleichheit bäuerlicher Haushalte immer deutlicher. Moderne AgrarunternehmerInnen leben Tür an Tür mit BäuerInnen, die die kleinhäuslerische Landwirtschaft aus der sozialistischen Periode fortsetzen. Zentral ist dabei in einem Staat mit einer sehr kleinräumigen Landwirtschaft der Zugang zu Land, auf ökonomischer wie symbolischer Ebene. Besondere Schärfe erfährt dieser Konflikt im äußersten Südosten des Landes, der bis 1947 vor allem von LemkInnen bewohnt war, einer karpatho-rusynischen Minderheit. Nach einer Zwangsumsiedlungsaktion sind die interethnischen Beziehungen heute von komplexen und vielschichtigen Bruchlinien markiert.

English abstract
The Polish post-socialist transition is coined by a growing polarisation of society. In no other EU-country, so many people are still living from agriculture and in the countryside, the gap is widening, too. Modern agro-businesspeople live door to door with peasants continuing their small-scale production from the socialist era. In a country with a very small dimensioned agriculture the access to land is crucial, both economically and symbolically. Especially tense are these conflicts in the South-Eastern tip of Poland, which was inhabited predominately by Lemkos, a karpatho-rusyn minority. After a forced mass-deportation in 1947 the interethnic relations are rather complicated today.

Matthäus Rest, Mag. Phil., Studium der Kultur- und Sozialanthropologie an der Universität Wien, nebenbei Studium der Agrarwissenschaften an der Universität für Bodenkultur Wien. Zurzeit Studienassistent an der Uni Wien, tätig als freier Journalist, Senner und Schilehrer, organisiert Studienreisen an Holocaust-Gedenkstätten.
Matthäus Rest, received his MA in Social and Cultural Anthropology from the University of Vienna and also studied Agrarian Studies at the University of Applied Life Sciences Vienna. Currently, he is teaching assistant at the University of Vienna. Free journalist, dairyman, ski-instructor and organiser of study trips to Holocaust memorial sites.
