Abstract
“Das Internet” ist keine monolithische Medientechnologie sondern eine ganze Reihe von Applikationen, die in das soziokulturelle Leben der Menschen eingebettet sind, die diese in ihrem Alltag nutzen. Dieser Artikel analysiert einerseits das soziale Leben einer öffentlich zugänglichen Mailingliste, die unterschiedliche indigene und nicht-indigene Menschen zu einem globalen elektronischen Netzwerk verbindet. Andererseits befasst sich der Text mit einer Usenet Newsgroup, die sich dem soziokulturellen Leben in Österreich widmet. Anhand dieser zwei cyberanthropologischen Fallbeispiele werden die engen Verbindungen zwischen “realen” Ereignissen und deren “virtueller” Behandlung und Diskussion aufgezeigt. “Virtuelle” Lebenswelten lassen sich so nicht vom “realen” Leben und seinen Themen trennen.

English abstract
Speaking of “the internet”, one often forgets that this is not a monolithic media technology, but a whole range of applications embedded in the life of people practicing these technologies. This paper explores on the one hand the social life of a publicly accessible mailing list that connects various indigenous and non-indigenous persons to form a global electronic network. On the other hand, it analyses a Usenet newsgroup, which is dedicated to the socio-cultural life in Austria. With the help of two cyberanthropological case studies the interconnections between “real life” or offline issues and “virtual” or online lives on mailing lists and newsgroups is demonstrated. The paper intends to show that “virtual life” never can be separated from “real life” and its issues.

Mag. Philipp Budka
Philipp Budka ist Dissertant am Institut für Kultur- und Sozialanthropologie der Universität Wien. Er ist interessiert an Medien, Technologien, Konstruktionen von Identitäten, Konzepten von Gemeinschaft, sozialen Netzwerken, der Produktion, Distribution und Transformation von Wissen, Lernen und Lehren, ethnographischen Methoden sowie Fussballfankulturen. Philipp arbeitet und forscht zur Zeit in unterschiedlichen Feldern, wie dem nordwestlichen Ontario, Kanada, diversen Internet-Umgebungen und der Universität Wien.
Philipp Budka is a PhD candidate with the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology of the University of Vienna. He is interested in media, technologies, identity construction, social networks, community concepts, production and transfer of knowledge, learning and teaching, ethnographic methods, and football culture. Philipp is currently doing work in a variety of fields such as Northwestern Ontario, Canada, several internet environments, and the University of Vienna, Austria.
