Abstract
Dies ist ein Sammelband zum Gedenken an Paul Stirling, 25 Jahre nach seinem Tod. Paul Stirling war ein Sozialanthropologe, der ethnografische Forschungen durchführte und als Pädagoge und Administrator an mehreren Universitäten arbeitete. Die Zusammenstellung ist in fünf Teile gegliedert. Der erste Teil ist seinen Beiträgen an der University of Kent/UK und der Middle East Technical University/Türkei gewidmet. In den Artikeln im zweiten und dritten Teil werden seine Beiträge zur Anthropologie der Türkei und zur Erforschung des sozialen Wandels erörtert. Teil vier enthält Artikel von Autoren, deren Betreuer Stirling Betreuer waren. Der letzte Teil besteht aus Artikeln über Paul Stirling. Diese Beiträge beziehen sich auf seine unmittelbaren Forschungsaufenthalte in den beiden von ihm untersuchten türkischen Dörfern. Anstelle einer Zusammenfassung enthält der Band auch ein bisher unveröffentlichtes „Grundgerüst für einen Vortrag“, den Paul Stirling im Februar 1980 in einem Seminar zur sozialanthropologischen Forschung über das „Schreiben einer Abschlussarbeit“ gehalten hatte.

Abstract english
This is a collected volume to commemorate Paul Stirling, 25 years after he passed away. He was a social anthropologist who conducted ethnographic research and worked as an educator and administrator at several universities. The compilation is organized under five parts. The first part is devoted to his contributions to the University of Kent and Middle East Technical University. Articles in parts two and three discuss his contributions to the anthropology of Turkey and to the study of social change. Part Four includes articles by authors who were Stirling’s supervisees, while the last part consists of articles about Paul Stirling situated in the two Turkish villages where he conducted research. In lieu of conclusion, a previously unpublished “skeleton for a talk” that Paul Stirling had given in a Social Anthropology Research Training Seminar in February 1980, about “writing a thesis” is also included in the volume.

Emine Onaran İncirlioğlu schloss zunächst ein Architektorstudium an der Middle East Technical University in Ankara/ Türkei ab. Danach studierte sie Anthropologie an der University of Florida in Gainesville ab. Für ihre Doktorarbeit arbeitete sie mit Paul Stirling zusammen, u.a. in den beiden Dörfern Sakaltutan und Elbaşı in der Provinz Kayseri. Nach ihrer Promotion lehrte sie an verschiedenen Universitäten in den USA, Großbritannien, Deutschland und der Türkei sowohl in den Bereichen Sozialwissenschaften als auch Design. Sie gehört zu den Gründungsmitgliedern der Cultural Studies Association of Turkey. Zu ihren Forschungsinteressen und Lehrgebieten zählen Kulturwissenschaften, ethnografische Feldforschung, ethnografische Romane, Geschlechterstudien, Zigeuner-/Romani-Studien und Themen unter der Rubrik Raum-Kultur-Identität. Nach ihrer Pensionierung verbrachte sie 2015 längere Zeit mit einem Stipendium der Hrant-Dink-Stiftung in Armenien und schrieb darüber ihre semi-ethnografischen Erinnerungen, die bald veröffentlicht werden sollen.
Emine Onaran İncirlioğlu, after receiving her first degree in architecture at Middle East Technical University, Ankara, completed her graduate work in anthropology at the University of Florida in Gainesville. She collaborated with Paul Stirling for her PhD dissertation fieldwork in the Sakaltutan and Elbaşı villages of Kayseri, and taught at various universities in the US, UK, Germany and Turkey, in both social science and design departments. One of the founding members of the Cultural Studies Association of Turkey, İncirlioğlu’s research, teaching and interest areas include cultural studies, ethnographic fieldwork, ethnographic novel, gender studies, Gypsy/Romani studies and themes under the rubric of space-culture-identity. After her retirement, she stayed in Armenia in 2015 with a scholarship from the Hrant Dink Foundation and wrote her semi-ethnographic memories to be published soon.

Gabriele Rasuly-Paleczek hat einen MA in Soziologie und Politikwissenschaften (1979) und einen Ph.D. in Anthropologie, Turkologie und Islamwissenschaften (1984), verliehen von der Universität Wien, Österreich. Bis zu ihrer Pensionierung im Jahr 2021 war sie am Institut für Anthropologie der Universität Wien tätig. Darüber hinaus hat sie an verschiedenen akademischen Institutionen Vorträge gehalten. Von 1999 bis 2000 war sie Postdoktorandin an der Yale University und im Wintersemester 2012 Gastprofessorin an der University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Sie hat umfangreiche Feldforschung im ländlichen Raum der Türkei sowie bei afghanischen Flüchtlingen in Pakistan, der Türkei und Österreich durchgeführt. Sie hat zahlreiche Artikel und Bücher veröffentlicht, die sich mit der ländlichen Türkei, Lokalpolitik und Identitätsfragen in Afghanistan und der aktuellen Situation afghanischer Flüchtlinge in Österreich befassen.
Gabriele Rasuly-Paleczek holds an MA in Sociology and Political Sciences (1979) and a Ph.D. in Anthropology, Turkology and Islamic Studies (1984) awarded by the University of Vienna, Austria. Until her retirement in 2021, she worked at the Anthropology Department of the University of Vienna. Additionally, she has lectured at various academic institutions. In 1999-2000, she served as a post-doctoral fellow at Yale University, and in the fall term of 2012, she held the position of visiting professor at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. She has conducted extensive fieldwork in rural Turkey, as well as among Afghan refugees in Pakistan, Turkey and Austria. She has published numerous articles and books focusing on rural Turkey, local politics, identity issues in Afghanistan, and the current situation of Afghan refugees in Austria.
