Abstract

English abstract

The adhan, the Muslim call to prayer, is an acoustic marker in all countries with a majority of Muslim residents. In the context of the city of Vienna this reminder of the religious task of the prayer moves from the public acoustic sphere to the more private space of the prayer room. Stripped of its original purpose in the public space, it continues to be practiced and acquires new practical meanings, which are the subject of this article. To approach this question (1) an anthropological perspective on sound is being developed, combining different theoretical approaches and introducing new analytical tools, like the “acoustic artefact” and the “acoustic community”. (2) The adhan is being described as an “acoustic artefact” in its production process and its social and cultural context. (3) The situation of the adhan in Vienna’s acoustic sphere is being outlined and the new practical meanings developed in this context are being examined.
